Discovering the Joy of Farmers' Markets: A Sweet Experience with Cheese and Honey

Updated: Nov 9

Meeting Local Producers

One of the things we love about visiting Farmers' Markets is the chance to meet fantastic producers. At the last Newbury Farmers' Market, we had a delightful conversation with Village Maid. They create lovely cheeses, including the well-known Barkham Blue. Our discussion revolved around the perfect pairing of cheese and honey.

A Delicious Combination

We decided to experiment with one of their Wigmore cheeses, which recently won a Super Gold at the World Cheese Awards. We baked it with our own honey to create a baked cheese dish. The result was absolutely delicious! The creamy texture of the Wigmore combined with the rich sweetness of our raw honey made for an unforgettable experience.

The Benefits of Local Honey

Using local honey not only enhances the flavour of dishes but also supports our local bee populations. Bees play a crucial role in pollinating the plants that produce our food. By choosing raw honey from local sources, we contribute to the health of our environment and the sustainability of our food systems.

Exploring More Pairings

There are countless ways to enjoy cheese and honey together. For instance, try drizzling honey over a cheese platter. This simple addition elevates the entire experience. We can also explore different types of cheeses, from sharp cheddars to creamy bries, and see how they pair with various honey flavours.

Supporting Local Businesses

Visiting Farmers' Markets is not just about the food; it's about supporting local businesses. When we buy from local producers, we help strengthen our community. Each purchase contributes to the livelihoods of those who work hard to bring us quality products.

Next time you're at a Farmers' Market, take a moment to chat with the producers. Ask them about their products and their stories. You might discover a new favourite cheese or a unique honey that you never knew existed.

Let's make a conscious effort to support our local farmers and producers. Together, we can create a thriving community that values quality, sustainability, and delicious food.
